Episode #11: Optimizing Energy – Is it even worth it?

3 Questions to the Expert – and 3 simple answers to a complex phenomena.

„Poor management – or lack thereof – can now put a company at serious risk or cause it to lose competitiveness in the market”. This is how we began another conversation with Tomasz Krzempek about cost optimization in companies – or, simply put, what we really mean when we talk about saving money. To dive deeper into the topic, I warmly invite you to read: “3 Questions to the expert – and 3 simple answers to a complex phenomenon. Episode #11: Optimizing Energy – Is It Even Worth It?” with Tomasz Krzempek from Prime Energy Polska.

Anna Modrzewska: Why has the topic of optimizing energy and gas costs become so important right now – for both businesses and individuals? And is it even worth it?

Tomasz Krzempek: In recent years, energy and gas have become hot topics due to a drastic increase in prices—often by several dozen percent. This has clearly revealed which businesses actively manage their energy costs and which leave it unchecked. As a result, energy and gas have become key factors in gaining a competitive advantage and significantly impact the final cost of a product. Poor management—or lack thereof—can now put a company at serious risk or cause it to lose competitiveness in the market.

The same goes for households, where heating and electricity bills have started to seriously strain family budgets. Without government subsidies, Polish families would have felt the impact even more.

Today, we are dealing with high price volatility and growing regulatory pressure (e.g. EU ETS, Fit for 55), which makes cost optimization and energy management a necessity rather than a choice. Moreover, technology and market conditions now offer real opportunities – from changing suppliers and choosing the right energy product, to selecting the optimal tariff and contract power, and even implementing intelligent energy consumption management systems and energy storage solutions.

Anna Modrzewska: Where should you start if you really want to reduce your energy bills?

Tomasz Krzempek: The most important step is to begin with an analysis of your current situation. For businesses, this means reviewing existing contracts, products, tariffs, usage profiles, and distribution fees. In practice, we often find that clients have been overpaying for years without realizing that savings are possible – simply because no one ever performed a proper review.

Anna Modrzewska: What are the most common mistakes clients make when trying to save on energy – and how can they avoid them?

Tomasz Krzempek: The biggest mistake is the belief that “it’s all too complicated,” “it’s not worth the effort,” or “I checked once and it seemed fine.” In reality, well-managed energy can become one of the most predictable costs-measurable, analyzable, and manageable.

Here are some common pitfalls:

Lack of analysis – Many businesses operate on autopilot, renewing contracts with the same supplier or sticking to a tariff that doesn’t fit their consumption.

Chasing the lowest price – Without considering hidden costs such as service fees, contract conditions, product structures, or market index dependencies.

No strategy – Acting once without ongoing monitoring or follow-up.

Delayed response – Addressing energy issues only when bills become unmanageable.
